Will to Heal

Since the governments of Canada and Quebec have publicly acknowledged all the abuse they have done to First Nations, it is fair to say that a wave of change is taking place in all communities. This acknowledgement by the governments, in addition to the public apology, has had such a great impact that a whole new reality, a desire for healing has taken hold in all Aboriginal communities.

THE WILL TO HEAL

We can only be delighted to see this thirst for wellness emerge; it is the essential ingredient for change. However, to achieve this, new strategies adapted to the unique reality and lifestyle of each community are needed. It is now known that the benefits are far greater when our actions are directed at preventing a problem from occurring rather than waiting and intervening on it. This reality, now accepted by all, is an integral part of our society and contributes to our collective well-being. Indeed, acting before the problem manifests itself is the key to real and lasting changes over time. It is true that the results expected from our preventive interventions are long in coming, but that is exactly what is needed for a healing process to take place, especially when the environment in question has already been severely affected for several generations.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

Youth involvement can take place through a variety of activities including volunteering, social engagement, individual or team sports, music, and arts or other intellectual or manual pursuits, which can be carried out in the various settings of the family, school, youth, school, or community organizations.

To be considered as involvement, activities must have certain characteristics: provide a link between the individual and the outside world, be important and meaningful, be structured and have a clear purpose, compared to random activities (e.g., watching TV, being on the internet, online games, and social networks, etc.). In addition, they should provide young people with caring adults and role models who support and encourage their engagement.
